One of the worlds first big stars and highest-paid actresses of her day, singer-comedienne Gracie Fields rose to fame in Depression-era England, captivating audiences with her common touch and symbolizing courage and optimism. World War II breaks out when Gracie is at the peak of her career and recovering from a major illness. Determined to do her duty for her country and fans, she travels to France to entertain British troops and raise money for Spitfires. But when Italy enters the war, Gracie decides to move to North America with her Italian-born husband, Hollywood director Monty Banks (Tom Hollander), to prevent him from being interned a move that is not without consequence for them both.
